Domestic Short Hair |

Albert is a classic dark brown tabby with extra toes on all four paws. He came to HART through fault of his own and is almost 11 years old. At first, he was understandably sad and confused to leave his home, but he is now relaxed and shows his sweet, loving purrsonality. He is a gentle boy who loves human attention, and catnip toys. You'll usually find him comfortably perched in a cat tree, looking hopefully for some petting and loving attention. Although he came in with his brother, Theodore, we don't feel that they are bonded. (Although it would be really nice to have them go home together....)
Albert has some medical concerns (as do many aging cats): he has some chronic discharge from his eyes, has some signs that he could have kidney issues in the future and has a sensitive digestive system. We manage him with a once a day medication, fluids under skin a couple times a week, plus we feed him a limited ingredient diet of duck. He is a wonderful boy that will thrive in a loving, quiet home!
Since Albert has some health concerns (typical for an older cat), our medical team requires an experienced home and an established veterinarian relationship.
Come meet this amazing boy today. He will just melt your heart!

Basil is a cute, 4-year-old tabby girl with lovely gray coloring and a cute, pale pink-orange nose. She was surrendered to HART this past Spring when her former guardian unfortunately could no longer provide the care she needed. When she arrived, she was experiencing significant fur loss as well as chronic vomiting and GI issues, which our Medical Team determined were caused by severe food allergies. Now that Basil is on medications and an appropriate diet, she is doing much better and becoming the outgoing, playful cat she wants to be (Ideally, she would be fed a prescription diet for her allergies but at HART, due to costs, we are unable to feed the prescription diet to an entire room.) Basil would do best in a calm, cat-savvy home with an adopter who is experienced with giving oral medications and who has an established relationship with a veterinarian. She gets along with the other cats in her room, and we believe she would do fine with older children and laid-back dogs. Our Adoption Team will review her specific health care needs with you prior to adoption. Meet Basil in Room 1.

Meet Blackbeard! This handsome, FIV-positive guy came to HART from our rescue partners in Pennsylvania. At just over 8 years old, Blackbeard sports the big, puffy cheeks of a once-intact male, has impressively long whiskers, and a confident demeanor and cool, calm attitude. Blackbeard doesn’t mind sharing his space with other easygoing cats, though he’s sure to remind them who’s in charge.
When it comes to human friends, Blackbeard has a special fondness—for their shoes! He loves to rub his head against the tops of sneakers and can often be found right at your feet, looking for attention. Blackbeard also has a playful side, especially when it comes to his little green spiky toys. He’ll entertain himself for hours and, if he’s not ready for you to leave, might give you a gentle swipe to convince you to stay a bit longer. He’s independent and has a wonderfully easygoing personality, making him a great companion for someone seeking a laid-back feline friend.
Blackbeard does have some pre-existing health needs, including skin allergies and eye entropion. He’s currently on a couple of medications and follows a special diet. Due to these medical needs, his adopter should have a good relationship with a trusted vet, and a consultation with our Medical Manager will be part of his adoption process.
A favorite here at HART, Blackbeard is ready to make some lucky human very happy with his affectionate nature and cuddly presence. Whether it’s curling up on your lap or lounging next to you on the couch, he’s sure to bring warmth to his forever home. We can’t wait to see him find his special person!

Breed: |

|
Chris is a very handsome 11-year-old gray & white boy that was returned to HART when his owner had health issues and could no longer take care of him. Curious and observant, Chris enjoys watching his surroundings and is a gentle sweetheart who craves love, especially from his feline friends—he’s often found curled up beside them. When nervous, he paces in leftward circles, a behavior believed to be neurological. Though fearful of being picked up, Chris is affectionate if his boundaries are respected. He also loves to play with toys, either with other cats or on his own
Chris came to HART with Fluffy who is also in Room 5. It would be nice to send the two of them home together, but they can be separated. He is a very sweet boy who adores other cats, because of this, we think he should go home with another cat, or his new home needs to have at least one other cat that is looking for a friend and Chris can bond with.
If you are interested in meeting Chris, please fill out the online adoption application and a team member will contact you to set up an appointment to come in to meet Chris and the coordinator of the Shy Angels socialization team.

Breed: |

Dewey is a sweet, almost 13-year-old, handsome hunk of a orange tabby cat. He was recently returned to HART because he did not get along with the other cat in his previous home. His former guardian was very sad to bring Dewey back, but despite several months of trying everything to make it work out, the situation did not improve. At the shelter, he more or less puts up with his feline roommates, preferring to keep to himself, but he can be a bit of a bully if pushed past his comfort zone. When it comes to people, though, Dewey is all in! This chatty guy loves spending quality time with humans, is super-snuggly, and loves being petted--and he has even been known to let you pick him up so he can give you enthusiastic head-butts. He enjoys interactive playtime with a peacock feather and a stringy toy with a mouse on the end. He also looooves Churu treat time!
Due to his history and strong personality, Dewey is looking for an experienced, cat-savvy home without any children or other animals, where he can spend his retirement years giving lots of love and happiness to his special people. Dewey has some medical issues, including chronic vomiting, early renal disease, and a heart murmur. His new adopter will need to have an established relationship with a veterinarian. We will also have his adopter meet with our Shy Angels Program Lead to discuss Dewey's particular needs and how best to acclimate him to his new home--although he is not shy, he has benefitted from living with our Shy Angels cats and working with our team of volunteers who know him well.
Dewey will be a wonderfully loving companion for his lucky adopter! Please submit an adoption application and come in to meet him in Room 5.

Sabrina is a beautiful dark gray long-haired beauty that was returned to HART when her owner could no longer care for her. Sabrina is a very happy, playful, friendly, and very smart kitty. She loves playing with the peacock feather and toys that are stringy and have a toy on the end. She loves to sit in the window and watch birds.
Sabrina makes friends with male kitties very quickly and would benefit either by going home with a male kitty or have a male kitty at new adopter's home. She came in with Tony, who is also in her room at the shelter, but it is not required that they have to go together.
Being the princess that she is she likes to be brushed which helps keep her fine hair in order. She is not a "lap" cat,but does like to be near her owner when working or watching tv.
If Sabrina sounds like the kitty, you are looking for, please fill out the online application to get approved. Someone from HART will reach out to you to set up a time to come in an meet her. Breed: |
Domestic Short Hair |

|
Freya is a gorgeous, dilute tortie and white girl who is about 4 years old. Adopted from HART as a kitten, she was returned to us last year because she was urinating outside of the litterbox. Our Medical Team believes this was due to a medical condition that was causing chronic irritation in her bladder. Since placing her on a medication that helps with both bladder issues and stress, and feeding her a primarily wet-food diet, we have not seen this behavior from her here at the shelter.
Freya looks for attention from visitors and enjoys being petted. She also likes to play, and especially enjoys wand toys and spring toys. She'll carry toys in her mouth and play with them as well. It must be noted that she can be a little sneaky about chewing plastic, feathers, string, and other things she should not eat, so her future family should have a fully cat-proofed house and a watchful eye! Freya will do best in a calm home with experienced cat guardians who will help her acclimate to her new environment. We will require that her adopter has an established vet relationship to ensure her health can be monitored. Our Adoption Team will review her specific needs with you prior to adoption.

Jayden is a beautiful, 8.5-year-old, classic brown tabby girl who came to HART from a rescue partner here in Maine during the Winter of 2022. We don’t know much about Jayden’s past life, or, how many lives she may have used up before arriving at our shelter, but she came in very under-socialized and fearful of people. She still tends to be more comfortable with the company of other cats rather than humans, but she has made great progress, thanks to Our Shy Angels Team volunteers who have been working with her to build her confidence and trust in people. Jayden is a playful cat, and she enjoys playing with interactive toys. She will share her affectionate side with staff and volunteers she knows well, and has even been known to give little kisses to her favorite people, including our Medical Manager--it really is the cutest thing!
Jayden needs a calm, quiet home with experienced, patient adopters who can read her body language and appreciate the spicy aspects of her personality while helping her continue on her path towards becoming a self-assured kitty companion. We feel that she will thrive in a home of her own with a person or couple who really "gets" her. If you would like to meet Jayden and consider giving her a loving home, please complete an online adoption application. Lilly is a pretty, 12-year-old tabby who came to HART via another rescue when her owners were no longer able to care for her. What we have learned about her is that she has a lovely purr, is very gentle, and likes the quiet life. She is often seen hanging out on top of high perches or on a cat tree. She is not one that wants to be in the middle of the action. But, she does love human attention and is always in the mood for pets and scritches.
Lilly is a diabetic. Currently, she is not on insulin but that can change. She does require regular monitoring of her blood sugar and needs to eat a low-carb, wet food only diet (we use Fancy Feast Classic Pate). She is also prone to chronic vomiting, and takes a daily oral medication in a “pill pocket” to help keep this in check. We do require that her adopter have a well-established relationship with a veterinarian. HART's Medical Team will provide training in the care of a diabetic cat, along with a blood-glucose testing kit with related supplies, and a generous starter supply of canned food. In order to make these preparations, she won't be able to go home on the same day that you meet her.
Lilly currently lives at the shelter. She is ready to meet you and move into your lap! Please submit an adoption application and make time to meet Lilly in Room 4.

Marilyn Monroe is a lovely, 4-year-old kitty with a beautiful white coat with black markings, along with golden eyes and a beauty spot on one side of her pink nose. She is definitely a glamour puss! She came to HART last year from our rescue partner in Tennessee, and raised a litter of kittens who were all adopted. She’s ready to shine in her own spotlight and find her forever home.
Marilyn Monroe seeks you out for attention when you enter her room, and she loves to hang out and to be petted. She’s also playful and especially enjoys dangly toys. She is an alpha female cat, and can be particular about which of her feline roommates she will tolerate. And she'll let you know when she's done with petting. Marilyn would do best in an experienced, cat savvy home with people who can patiently acclimate her to the household. We've seen her interact with children and she does very well with them. She is selective about the dogs she likes, but cat-friendly dogs who are calm would likely be OK.
We have observed that Marilyn Monroe does have some anxiety and stress issues, most likely from living in the shelter, so our Medical Team started her on a medication to help her cope. Like any true celebrity, she only eats the finest of foods and is currently eating a limited ingredient diet of duck and green pea. We tell her it's because she's special, but really it’s to help keep her allergies in check—she is prone to an immune response that causes small bumps on the underside of her chin which, if not treated, could become irritated and uncomfortable. We will require that her adopters have an established veterinarian relationship. Our Adoption Team will review her specific health needs with you prior to adoption.

He was transferred to HART because he is diabetic, and we have a lot of experience with successfully caring for diabetic cats. His diabetes is currently well-managed with a low-carb, canned food only diet (in our shelter, we feed Fancy Feast Classic Pate), and twice-daily insulin injections. Oscar is a handsome, light brown tabby with warm highlights in his fur. He and his brother were well-loved in their previous home, but unfortunately they needed to return to HART in the Spring of 2022 when their former guardian could no longer care for them. His brother has found his perfect retirement home, but Oscar is still looking for his. Now 14 years old, Oscar has learned to go with the flow of shelter life. Although he does not seek attention from those who enter his room, and tends to sit on the sidelines, hoping you will notice him, he is actually a friendly cat who loves people and enjoys being petted. He needs a home with experienced, cat-savvy people, and may do OK living with another laid-back cat.
Oscar is diabetic, and his condition is managed with twice-daily insulin injections and a low-carb, canned food only diet (in our shelter, we feed Fancy Feast Classic Pate). He also has a history of cystitis as well as hyperthyroidism and is prone to chronic vomiting, so he takes daily medications to treat these issues. Oswald is a very sweet boy who wants to crawl right into your lap. He is 9 years old and has the cutest big ears and a very soft, brown tabby coat. He came to HART in August after being found as a stray living in a barn. When he first arrived, he was in pretty rough shape, and our Medical Team discovered that he had severely matted fur and significant dental disease, as well as diabetes. Since receiving a dental cleaning with extractions and having the mats shaved, he is feeling much more comfortable and looking so much better! His diabetes is currently managed with a low-carb, canned food only diet (in our shelter, we feed Fancy Feast Classic Pate) and twice-daily insulin injections. We will require that his adopter has an established relationship with a veterinarian. In order to make these preparations, he won't be able to go home on the same day that you meet him.
Oswald’s transformation has been remarkable, and he has become a favorite among our volunteers. He is not the biggest fan of some of his feline roommates, so he would probably do best in a single cat household, where he can get all of your attention. He would love to be welcomed into your home and spoiled with all the love that he deserves! Meet this very special boy in Room 4.

PK (aka Kitty) |

Female |
Age: |
7 years |
Status: |

Breed: |
Domestic Short Hair |

|
PK is an adorable 7-year-old, white and black, short-haired cat who was found more than 4 years ago in a feral cat colony and trapped by one of our partner animal rescue organizations here in Maine. She transferred to HART and moved into one of our experienced foster homes so she could decompress and get used to being around people. As it turned out, this took quite a while, because PK proved to be a rather independent and strong-willed kitty who could be rather aggressive when she feels unsure or threatened. Her foster home just adored her but eventually knew that she needed to have more visibility to potential adopters, so after seeing great forward progress and success, PK came into the shelter. She is blossoming even more at HART. She adores laying in the sun, likes to play and loves attention. PK has befriended many volunteers who she enjoys spending quality time with, and they in turn love her!
Before she came to the shelter, her foster family patiently worked with her to earn her trust and improve her confidence and people-skills. Patience, consistent routine, and smart use of food motivation allowed PK to make great progress, and she has become quite comfortable with humans. She is very accepting of pets, scritches, and the occasional gentle belly rub. She would sometimes even sleep on a pillow next to her foster mom at night. The biggest change in her is that she now purrs! When she is feeling really happy, she will chirp and chatter in such a cute way. PK is also very playful, and she simply loves interactive playtime--you should see how she picks up toys and walks around with them! Of course, PK still does have her limits, but the good news is that she gives clear cues when she's at or near her threshold so you know to back off and can avoid getting swatted.
While she was in foster care, we discovered that PK has a renal (kidney) condition that requires 2 medications and regular monitoring. She takes her medications like a champ and eats a prescription dry food and Fancy Feast canned food. For more information about PK’s condition and her specific health needs, please contact our Medical Manager, Bobbi-Jo, directly via email at b.dobbs@hartofme.org.
She will need a calm home with a patient, cat-savvy person or couple who will give her time to acclimate to her new environment and continue to work with her on socialization while also allowing her to be herself. PK should not be in a home where children live or visit, and she would probably do best as the only animal in the household.
If you would like to meet this wonderful cat, please complete an online adoption application, specifying PK, and a member of our Adoption Team will reach out to you to schedule a time for a meet-and-greet.

Speck is a beautiful, volunteer-favorite, a 13-year-old, long-haired, tabby girl with bright green eyes. Originally surrendered to HART in the Fall of 2021, Speck was adopted shortly thereafter but was then returned to us, at no fault of her own, because her household was not a good fit for her. She enjoys spending time with people, and while she has a somewhat reserved, subtle personality, she likes gentle attention and receiving scratches and pets. She is looking for a calm, quiet home without young children or dogs - but would do ok with cats that respect her space. She will be happy as your low-key feline buddy.
Speck has significant environmental and flea allergies which are well-managed by feeding her a special, non-prescription, limited-ingredient diet (duck is the primary ingredient), giving her daily medication and supplements, and ensuring she is not exposed to fleas (we recommend using flea preventative year-round). Speck also is hyper-thyroid. She takes medication twice per day for this, in a little pill wrap or pill pocket. Our Adoption Team will review her specific health needs with you before adoption. We will require that her adopters have a well-established relationship with a trusted veterinarian and that they be experienced cat guardians.
We would love for Speck to find a home of her very own for her golden years. Please submit an adoption application and come in to meet this special kitty in Room 1.

Spunky is a total sweetheart of a cat who is just so friendly and affectionate. A true lap cat, she would love nothing more than than a home to settle right into and with people to snuggle! She is a confident yet easy-going cat who gets along with other laid-back cats and who adjusts well to new situations.
Spunky has some medical conditions that our medical team monitors. A medical evaluation revealed that she has a heart condition which, unfortunately, carries a risk of worsening. At this time, there has been very little changes in her condition and we feel it should not stop her from being in a loving home. Spunky also has some back pain that flares-up from time to time. If we could get her a little more active, this may not be an issue for her.
Our Medical Manager would be happy to speak with potential adopters about Spunky's medical needs. Spunky does not let her issues slow her down, and she enjoys life to the fullest, sharing her bright and amiable personality with everyone she meets!
Spunky is currently living in a local foster home. She enjoys sitting in the laps of people under the guise of "helping" with their daily work! We are looking for an adoptive family who will cherish this very special girl, with the understanding that she will require regular health monitoring and care. Tank is a very handsome and laid-back, 16 1/2-year-old tabby gentleman who came from a very loving home. He developed diabetes, and when his previous family determined that they could no longer provide the care he needed, they made the difficult decision to surrender him to HART in the Spring of 2023. We can see how much he was loved because of how relaxed he is around our staff, volunteers, and visitors alike. He loves to be held, and will occasionally let you hold him like a baby. He also enjoys playtime --especially with string toys -- and moves much more quickly than you might expect him to. When he sees you coming, his eyes light up as he waits to receive some loving.
Tank has been doing very well and is relaxed around humans and his feline roommates. He is overweight, tipping the scales at 17 pounds, and we recommend that he loose some weight. His diabetes is being well-managed with a low-carb, canned food only diet (in our shelter, we feed Fancy Feast Classic Pate), and he currently does not require insulin injections. Name: |
Toby |
Sex: |
Male |
Age: |
6 years |
Status: |
Available |
Breed: |
Domestic Short Hair |
|
|
|
Toby is a handsome, black and white male cat with a broad white stripe on his face, a white muzzle, and a pink nose. This big fellow is about 6 years old, and came to HART in the Fall of 2022 from a rescue partner in Pennsylvania. Toby often assumes the role of “Greeter” in his room, and will walk up to visitors to receive some attention and love. Once he makes your acquaintance, he may walk away to conduct other business, such as bird watching. He's not inclined to hang out with his feline roommates, but he doesn't react aggressively if any of them are rude to him, and sometimes he even finds one that he kind of likes. One of the first things you'll notice about Toby (besides his great personality) is that he has a stubby tail-- his tail was amputated prior to his arrival at HART, due to some kind of previous trauma. As a result, he is not keen about having his back or hindquarters touched (that cute, little tail is a definitely no-touchie zone!), and he will help set those boundaries for you by giving you a little nip.
Toby is positive for Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV), which means he has a compromised immune system and could be more prone to infections and dental disease. FIV is a species-specific virus (i.e., humans can't get it) that is typically transmitted via a deep bite wound from a FIV+ cat to another cat. Other cats cannot get FIV from just being around infected cats, from sharing litter boxes or food bowls, or from a person touching a FIV+ cat and then touching a FIV-negative cat. Most FIV+ cats live normal lives and have a typical length of life. Like any FIV+ cat, Toby should have routine medical and dental care, and his health should be regularly monitored by his veterinarian.
Toby requires an experienced, cat-savvy home with people who understand and appreciate cats with strong personalities. He would be best-suited for a household without young children and without dogs. He's told us more than once that he really does not like dogs! Since he has a tendency to be on the chunky side, his adopters should be willing to help him maintain a healthy weight through a sensible diet and regular exercise.
